The Portuguese Embassy in Brasília hosts a debate on the right to the city
The Portuguese Embassy in Brasília, the Camões – Portuguese Cultural Centre and the Casa da Arquitetura – Portuguese Centre for Architecture are organising a conference and debate entitled ‘The Right to the City’ on 5 August at 6.30 pm, which will take place at the Portuguese Embassy in Brasília.
The initiative brings together Judge Margareth Rodrigues Costa, a judge at the Superior Labour Court (TST); architect Matheus Seco, from the BLOCO Arquitetos studio; and architect Nuno Sampaio, Executive Director of Casa da Arquitetura.
Taking the exhibition ‘Lucio Costa Arquivo’, currently on display at Casa da Arquitetura, as its starting point, the event aims to reflect on the legacy of the urban planner responsible for the masterplan of Brasília – a symbol of an ideal of modernity – and its relevance in the face of the challenges facing contemporary cities.
Against a backdrop of profound social, environmental and territorial transformations, the debate will seek to explore how urban planning can guarantee the right to the city, promote greater spatial justice and strengthen citizenship. Starting with the question “What kind of city do we want to build, and for whom?”, the guests will explore different perspectives on the role of architecture, urban planning and public policy in building more inclusive, sustainable and democratic cities.
