Casa da Arquitetura begins a new chapter with Pedro Violas as president

The new board spans various fields of activity and brings together leading figures from the cultural, academic and institutional spheres.

Architect Nuno Sampaio, previously executive director and chief curator, has been re-elected to the board, ensuring continuity in the institution’s strategic and curatorial direction.

The Board also includes Rosário Gambôa, a higher education lecturer and former president of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, and the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, a Pritzker Prize laureate with deep ties to Casa da Arquitectura, the institution to which he has entrusted his collection. Also serving on this body are Elisa Ferreira, former European Commissioner; Elisabete Saldanha, representing Mota-Engil; and Jorge Sobrado, Councillor for Culture and Heritage, representing Porto City Council.

The Supervisory Board will be chaired by José Lemos and also includes Paulo Moreira dos Santos, representing APDL, and Mónica Monteiro, a chartered accountant.

The General Assembly retains its current composition, with Luísa Salgueiro, Mayor of Matosinhos, as chair, Avelino Oliveira, President of the Portuguese Architects’ Association, and Alberto Amorim Pereira, President of GAIURB (Vila Nova de Gaia Municipal Council).

With a background in Law and Management, Pedro Violas works in the business sector, serving on the boards of several companies, including the Super Bock Group, Solverde and Cotesi, alongside his role on the Advisory Board of Futebol Clube do Porto.

The re-elected chair of the General Assembly, Luísa Salgueiro, states that “this new cycle represents a significant renewal of the governing bodies, bringing together individuals with experience and links to architecture who give us the confidence to consolidate the work carried out and project the Casa da Arquitetura into the future”.

This new leadership, adds Nuno Sampaio, “comes at a time when Casa da Arquitetura has a very different scope today than it did nine years ago, which means rethinking strategies and integrating new areas of expertise. At the same time, there is a clear continuity of vision, which is fundamental to ensuring stability and long-term focus”.

The new configuration of the governing bodies reflects Casa da Arquitetura’s recent trajectory, reinforcing its role in the preservation, study and promotion of architecture in Portugal and on the international stage.
